Protecting our Groundwater Supply: How Richfield is Doing it and Why

Dr. Douglas S Cherkauer
Abstract: Hydrogeologist and resident Dr. Douglas S Cherkauer has been working with the Village of Richfield on a comprehensive groundwater monitoring program for more than a decade. In order to assure that the groundwater resource that supplies all of Richfield residents with water will always be sufficient, the community developed a unique, three part program to protect its water supply. The program involves: 1. land use planning 2. bimonthly monitoring of water levels in wells and waterways and 3. an ordinance that requires new developments to assess their water needs in advance.
